Overview

Built in 1969 by Alaska sportfishing pioneers Bob and Gayle Curtis, Tikchik Narrows Lodge remains a true Alaskan classic. Bob and Gayle sold Tikchik Narrows Lodge to past employee Bud Hodson in 1986. Bud had worked at Tikchik from 1975 through 1978 and managed another lodge prior to the purchase. Today Bud remains firmly at the helm and has a hard-earned reputation for running one of the finest luxury fishing lodges in the state.

Tikchik Narrows Lodge is in the Bristol Bay region of southwest Alaska in the 1.5-million-acre Wood-Tikchik State Park. Bordering the state park to the west is the Togiak National Wildlife Refuge, which encompasses another 4.7 million acres of land. This area includes the ruggedly beautiful Kilbuck Mountains and is only accessible by float plane. The lodge has access to all five species of Pacific salmon, as well as rainbow trout, Arctic char, grayling and pike. It is a full fly-out operation and also benefits from some great private water leases.

Fishing Program

Nowhere else in the world will you find a greater variety and volume of sportfish than in Bristol Bay, Alaska. Bristol Bay offers five species of Salmon: King, sockeye, chum, pink and silver salmon and six species of fresh water fish: Rainbow trout, Arctic grayling, Arctic char, Dolly Varden, lake trout and northern pike. Tikchik Narrows Lodge fishes the entire western half of Bristol Bay including the Nushagak drainage, Wood River Lakes, Tikchik Lakes, Togiak River drainage, Kvichak River and many other smaller rivers. The waters they fish vary in size from large to small and are a perfect match for advanced and novice anglers alike.

Each day’s fishing assignments are scheduled the evening before. Where you fish each day will depend on your preferences. Each evening guests will know where they are going, who their pilot is and who their guide will be. The pilots and guides meet with guests after dinner to suggest which tackle to take and let the fishermen know how to prepare for the next day’s fishing adventure. Breakfast is served at 6:45am. The airplanes and guides are ready to depart shortly after breakfast. Guests return to the lodge each evening between 4:30pm and 6:00pm. Dinner is served around 7:00pm.

In the spirit of conservation and preserving historical size, abundancy and distribution, the lodge adheres to a strict catch and release policy with all rainbow trout. On occasion you may keep a lake trout or Dolly Varden for a shore lunch.

Tikchik Narrows Lodge has a very experienced guiding staff, many with decades of dedication to their craft. They are mature, friendly, knowledgeable and first and foremost, safety conscious. Whether you are a novice or an expert, your guide will be accommodating to your needs.

Anglers can keep their legal limit of salmon to take home. The staff will fillet, vacuum pack, freeze and package fish for travel home. This service is complementary.

The main lodge is elevated on a natural rock base on the tip of a narrow peninsula which separates Tikchik and Nuyukuk Lakes (Tikchik Narrows). It has large comfortable lounging areas with a natural stone fireplace and a unique circular dining room which is suspended above the lake. Both the main lodge and dining room are enclosed by large picture windows which offer spectacular panoramic views. There is a full bar and a large deck overlooking the “Narrows”.

Each room has a full private bath, independent heat and hot water, closet space, shelving and large picture windows. A limited number of single occupancy rooms are available for a fee. Guests start each day off with a hearty cooked-to-order breakfast or choose from a breakfast bar of fresh fruits, cereals and baked goods. Lunches are packed picnic-style for a streamside meal or if weather allows the guides will prepare a shore-lunch of freshly caught salmon. Shore lunches have quite a reputation and are a pleasure you won’t want to miss.
