Abaco Lodge, Bahamas

Dylan Rose July 25, 2023
Hurricane Dorian unleashed its wrath on the northern Bahamas in the early days of September 2019. Along its devastating path it destroyed countless lives, the well-being of entire townships, and several amazing bonefish operations that found themselves in its path. One of them was the legendary Nervous Waters operation called Abaco Lodge, which was leveled to the ground in minutes by 185 mph winds and a catastrophic storm surge. Follow that up with a world-beater pandemic only 5 months later, and it's safe to say that the staff, guides and families that make up Abaco Lodge have weathered quite a storm in recent years.

I'm happy to say that on my recent trip last May I found the newly rebuilt lodge fully operational and better than ever. Built on the same slab as the previous structure and painted the same classic deep red color, it was a shock to step on the grounds and find things nearly identical as before. With a clean and fresh new appearance, I couldn't be happier for all of the guides and staff that make Abaco Lodge such a magnificent destination

It's clear that the fishery took a massive wallop from the storm. In many areas the mangroves are still working to regenerate and much like the aftermath from a forest fire, it's amazing to see new mangrove shoots coming in and slowly taking back the ecosystem. Excitingly, the bonefish are thick on these flats! Everywhere we went we encountered healthy stocks of eager fish. Even more we also encountered solo cruising permit on sting rays and even some smaller active schools.
The bonefish were responsive, the guides top notch and the understated luxury of Abaco Lodge is shining once again at this amazing location. Don't miss getting on the books now as the new Abaco Lodge is sure to be a hit.
