Chilean Patagonia's Wild Diversity - Northern Aysen & Lower Los Lagos

Liam Donohoe April 01, 2026

What sets this region apart is the variety at scale. Vast drainage networks, true exploration, whitewater, wilderness, and fisheries that are remote and intact. For anglers looking for a Patagonia experience that goes beyond a single river or a single lodge, Northern Aysen delivers something deeper and more immersive.

The northern Aysen and the lower Los Lagos region represent one of the most compelling corners of Chilean Patagonia. This is a place defined by movement, adventure, and the true sense of remoteness that comes from one of the least traveled regions of Patagonia. Aquamarine rivers spilling out of mountains, jet boats pushing into rarely fished systems, and itineraries that evolve day by day based on conditions and opportunity.

At the center of this region are three standout programs, each offering a distinct way to experience the Palena basin and its surrounding waters.

Patagonian BaseCamp Lodge

Patagonian BaseCamp Lodge is one of the most adventurous and well-established programs in all of Patagonia, and for many anglers, a true bucket-list trip. Built around a well-appointed, European-style lodge on the Rio Palena, the program is defined by unmatched variety and a constant sense of discovery.

Fishing days here are dynamic and exploratory. Guests access an enormous range of water, including systems that may not be fished for years at a time. Multiple whitewater runs, jet boat travel, and a rotating lineup of fisheries ensure no two days feel the same. The guide team are year-round professional guides from North America and Chile and highly experienced, adding an additional layer of professionalism and familiarity for North American travelers.

Patagonian BaseCamp truly shines on longer itineraries, typically 11 or 14 days, allowing the program’s depth and range to fully unfold.

Patagonian Basecamp – The Outcamps

A defining feature of the BaseCamp experience is its network of remote outcamps, two of which are included on most itineraries:

Isla Leon Camp (Rio Palena)
Set on a private island, this camp provides access to prime Palena water and delivers a rare sense of isolation while maintaining comfort and thoughtful hospitality. Over the course of the two-day itinerary guests will experience the vast climatic changes from the arid top of the Andes back to the coastal temperate rainforest near the lodge with plenty of fish in between.

Temple Camp (Rio Figueroa)
Positioned on one of the region’s most celebrated rivers, Temple Camp offers technical fishing, exceptional scenery, and a distinctly wild feel. Exciting whitewater, unbeatable dry-fly fishing and a camp that is as comfortable as it is scenic.

El Escondido Camp

Over the past decade, Patagonian BaseCamp owner Marcel Sijnesael has assembled and protected a vast, private holding in the remote Rio Escondido Valley, creating exclusive access to pristine waters. This highly limited exploratory program hosts just four anglers at a time in a comfortable backcountry camp overlooking Lago Verde, providing access to untouched rivers, creeks, lakes, and hidden lagoons where anglers sight-fish gin-clear water for massive wild brown trout and abundant rainbows, often on dry flies. Physically demanding and intentionally exclusive, El Escondido is a true wilderness fly-fishing experience offered for only a handful of weeks each season, designed for adventurous anglers seeking untouched water and unparalleled solitude.

These camps allow guests to fully immerse themselves in the landscape while still returning to a refined main lodge experience throughout their trip.

Best suited for: Experienced anglers, adventure-focused travelers, and guests looking for a longer and deeply immersive Patagonia program.

Martin Pescador Lodge

Martin Pescador is a fishing-driven program that balances variety with comfort and polish. Operating out of two lodges, guests split their week between locations, unlocking access to a broad range of fisheries while maintaining a well-paced, thoughtfully structured itinerary.

The experience is high-end without feeling rigid. Fishing is the clear priority, but the program is full of subtle surprises with changes in water, scenery, and daily rhythm that keep the trip engaging throughout the week. Attention to detail, excellent food, and strong guiding elevate the overall experience.

Rio Yelcho Lodge
Set within the Valdivian rainforest, Rio Yelcho Lodge is a collection of private riverside casitas offering comfort and privacy in a dramatic natural setting. Each cabin features en suite bathrooms, wood-burning stoves, and outdoor decks. The main lodge includes a dining area, fully stocked bar, and deck with sweeping glacier and river views, along with hot tubs, a sauna, and direct river access.

Rio Rosselot Lodge

Located farther south, Rio Rosselot Lodge serves as a spacious and comfortable home base. Guests stay in private rooms with en suite bathrooms and river views, and enjoy generous wraparound decks, a welcoming common living area with a wood-burning stove and bar, and a hot tub. Like Río Yelcho, the lodge offers convenient on-property boat access and a dedicated wader room.

Best suited for: Anglers seeking a refined, fishing-first program with variety, structure, and comfort.

Eleven Experience - Rio Palena Lodge

Eleven Experience’s Rio Palena Lodge represents the pinnacle of luxury adventure travel in Patagonia with an emphasis on seamless service, extraordinary access, and boundless activity options. While the fishing is excellent, this lodge truly distinguishes itself through its non-angler and adventure programming, making it one of the most versatile high-end lodges anywhere in the world.

The hallmark of Rio Palena is its helicopter-accessed program, which unlocks terrain and experiences otherwise impossible to reach. Guests can embark on high-alpine hikes, glacier mountaineering, and remote ridge traverses, often culminating in chef-prepared meals served atop mountain peaks with sweeping views across untouched Patagonia.

Beyond heli-access, non-anglers can enjoy mountain biking, paddle boarding, and whitewater rafting on the legendary Futaleufu River, all coordinated effortlessly by the lodge team. This flexibility allows each guest to craft their own ideal balance of fishing, adventure, and relaxation while remaining part of a cohesive group experience.

The lodge itself sets a global benchmark for comfort and attentiveness. Service is intuitive and discreet, logistics are flawless, and the overall flow of a truly elite operation.

Best suited for: Mixed-interest groups, couples, and travelers seeking the ultimate adventure-forward luxury experience, where fishing, exploration, and once-in-a-lifetime moments coexist at the highest possible level.

Futaleufu River Sport Adventure

Set above the electric blue waters of the famous Futaleufu River, this program offers one of the most activity-rich experiences in all of Patagonia. While fishing for wild Patagonian trout is part of the offering, the hallmark of this program is its world-class whitewater. The Futaleufu is widely regarded as one of the premier rafting rivers on the planet, and guests spend multiple days navigating its Class IV and V rapids with expert guides. Beyond the river, days can include horseback riding through remote valleys, hiking in pristine terrain, and mountain biking a mix of single track and historic ox trails.

Accommodations are a refined take on a wilderness camp, with guests staying in safari-style tented bungalows perched above the river, complete with comfortable beds, down comforters, and thoughtful touches that balance comfort and immersion. Evenings are centered around a lively camp environment featuring gourmet meals, an open-air bar, riverside hot tubs, a sauna, yoga sessions, and fireside gatherings under the southern stars.

Best Suited For: Active travelers, mixed-interest groups and guests looking for a high-energy, muti-sport Patagonia experience where rafting, adventure and immersion take priority alongside with fishing.

Matapiojo Lodge

Also set along the banks of the upper Futaleufu River in Chile’s remote Palena Province, Matapiojo Lodge is built around diversity, exploration, and access to some of the least pressured trout water in Patagonia. Guests fish a constantly changing mix of rivers, tributaries, lakes, lagoons, and walk-and-wade water throughout the Futaleufu and Palena watersheds. Combined with comfortable glamping-style accommodations, excellent food, and the wild atmosphere of northern Patagonia, Matapiojo delivers a uniquely immersive and adventurous fishing experience.

Best Suited For: Serious anglers, budget-conscious Patagonia travelers, and guests looking for an authentic and immersive fishing experience centered around diverse water and remote landscapes. Ideal for those who value exploration and exceptional fishing over luxury, and who do not mind staying in comfortable riverside wall tents close to the action.
