Fall Deschutes River Float
Max Salzburg August 24, 2023
In mid-September the summer crowds on the river have waned, the air temperature is cooling, and the fish are hungry. In the fall, the large redband trout gorge themselves on the prolific October caddis hatches. As the weather cools the high-desert wildlife begins to become more active and it is not uncommon to see Bighorn sheep, deer, and dozens of species of birds while floating down the river.
The Deschutes is also a favored stomping ground for some of our favorite outfitters. David Renton has guided the river for more than 30 years and his wife Debbie has been there with him creating the most comfortable camps and preparing the tastiest meals that guided Deschutes anglers have ever experienced. In keeping with their priorities, they also raised their boys Dillon and Knut on the river and with time they have become an integral part of this finely tuned family-run outfitting business.
