It's Time for Tarpon! The Best of the Best Remaining Openings

Landon Mace July 15, 2025

There are some truly exceptional openings in the Yucatán and Brazil during the peak of their baby tarpon seasons. These operations offer easy access to some of our catalog’s most dynamic tarpon fisheries.

If you're interested in tarpon, now is the time to take advantage of the best of the best remaining openings across the season.

In the Yucatán, late spring through early fall offers some of the most action-packed and visually exciting fishing of the year. In Brazil, their season runs from the early fall into early spring. Baby tarpon are aggressive, acrobatic, and eager to explode on a fly. Whether you're sight-casting for rolling fish in rivers, probing mangrove-lined lagoons, or working fish on the open flats, the opportunities are consistent, and the takes are electric.

What makes these lodges stand out is their flexibility and access. Each day, you’ll head out with expert guides to explore a rotating mix of productive waters—hidden backcountry channels, remote saltwater flats, or lush river mouths. These programs are built around tide, weather, and your personal preferences, giving you the best shot at success each day. With rolling fish, frequent eats, and aerial fights, it's no wonder this is considered the prime time for baby tarpon.

Isla del Sabalo – Sage Experiences

After two dozen years in the international fly fishing travel business, it is rare that we come across a new program or fishery that takes us completely by surprise. But when seasoned international guides Everton Pires and Guido Perillo filled us in on what they were doing in Brazil, we were beyond surprised. Frankly we had no idea that were tarpon in Brazil, let alone 2,500 KM southeast of where the Amazon meets the Atlantic.

Isla del Sabalo or “Island of Tarpon”, is truly the frontier in world-class fly fishing for baby tarpon. Ranging in size from 5-to 30-plus pounds, these tarpon reside in environs of turtle grass flats and mangrove-lined lagoons, creeks and channels.
