Here are four premier combo itineraries for the 2026 season we love. These trips align the best insect hatch windows in Alberta and British Columbia with our top-tier lodges and guide services, providing a seamless transition from the big-water floats of the Bow River to the mountain freestones of the south and the Elk Valley.
The Stonefly & Tailwater Tour
This tour targets the peak of the Stonefly hatch on the Bow River. This is the best time of year for aggressive Rainbows and Browns looking for big bugs on the surface. You will also have the chance to fish the Elbow River Basin as it opens for Westslope Cutthroat. Then you'll head south to fish the premier river systems of Southern Alberta, including the Oldman, St. Mary, Waterton, and Castle rivers. This leg of the trip will offer a great mix of tailwater and freestone fishing, providing consistent opportunities for both large trout and high numbers of fish. This tour is all about high-volume dry fly action and diverse river systems.
This is prime time terrestrial season and classic mountain freestone dry-fly action, This is the heart of "Hopper-Dropper" season on the Bow. You'll float the Bow above and below Calgary and explore the alpine rivers in the Elbow River drainage. July also brings heavy Caddis and PMD hatches, offering world-class dry fly targets. You'll then continue on to fish the river systems of the Oldman, St. Mary, Waterton, and Castle rivers. This leg focuses on smaller, wade-friendly water and high-volume dry fly action for Westslope Cutthroat. It provides a perfect contrast to the large-river floats of the Bow, with a focus on wading and clear-water sight casting.
This option will let you experience the peak of the fall transition. This is all about aggressive streamer fishing and late-season dry fly action This is the best window for targeting large, resident Rainbow and Brown trout as they begin feeding aggressively before winter. You will focus on heavy-hitter streamer sessions and late-season BWO hatches on the Bow and Elbow Rivers. You'll then settle in to the Eastslope Outpost for a week on the mountain freestones. As water levels reach their seasonal lows, the rivers become incredibly clear, and the fish concentrate in predictable pools. This leg is all about the walk-and-wade experience, casting dry flies to rising Westslope Cutthroat in a classic mountain setting.
This option provides prime dry fly hatches and scenic river floats. This is the peak of the post-runoff season. You will target the legendary Golden Stonefly hatch on the Bow River. This window offers some of the most exciting dry fly fishing of the year as large rainbow and brown trout look for big bugs on the surface. You will also explore the Elbow River as it opens for Westslope Cutthroat. Experience the peak of the mid-summer hatches on the Elk River. The middle portion of the trip focuses on floating the river in drift boats, targeting Westslope Cutthroat during the Green Drake and Yellow Sally hatches. The Elk is famous for high-volume surface action and stunning mountain scenery. You'll then round out the trip with a walk-and-wade focus on the Oldman, St. Mary, Waterton, and Castle rivers. As systems stabilize in mid-July, they offer a diverse mix of freestone and tailwater fishing. This is a great window for high numbers of Cutthroat and shots at large Bull Trout.
