Prime Time Permit on The XFlats - Hosted Trip with Taylor Goodhue

Taylor Goodhue November 06, 2025

The XFlats has become a major name in the world of fly fishing for permit in recent years. Stories of permit eating floating crabs and dry flies grabbed my interest immediately.

This past April I had the chance to head down to this beachfront lodge in the small town of Xcalak. After a week of some of the best permit fishing I have experienced, I decided to host the same week in April 2026.

A brief background on the permit-fishing program: For anyone who’s been to the tropics, you may be familiar with the smell of sargassum. This floating algae covers much of the coastline of the Caribbean during warmer months and supports a wild variety of life. Among the most important, in our eyes, is the sargassum floating crab. These crabs feed in the algae, and as they move from patch to patch, permit seek them out while they swim on the surface. It provides some of the most exciting visual eats I have seen to date.

This is a prime-time window for this occurrence, but it’s still permit fishing. Permit are notoriously tricky to catch, but the reward is well worth it. Join Fly Water Travel’s Taylor Goodhue for a week of some of the best permit fishing around!
