The Sage Lodge Trout School

Max Salzburg April 23, 2025

The Sage Lodge Trout School is intended to guide the beginner angler through the necessary skills to become a competent fly fisher.

The Sage Lodge Trout school is designed for the angler who is just beginning their journey and includes the use of current Sage and Redington fly rods and RIO fly lines perfectly matched for the Yellowstone National Park area.  Wader and boot rental (if needed), flies, and terminal tackle, are all included in the school. Students can show up ready to learn and not worry about needing to purchase gear.   Students will learn the basics of fly fishing in the classroom on select mornings and evenings and spend the first day learning and refining general casting techniques on site at Sage Lodge. The second day of the course is designed to build on the foundation with anglers learning stream fishing tactics as well as essential river casting skills on the water on the Yellowstone River near the lodge.  The remaining two guided days will enable guests to practice the skills learned with top Montana guides on walk and wade trips into Yellowstone National Park and the Yellowstone River near the lodge.

Each Far Bank Fly Fishing School is designed so that students leave the course with all the knowledge and skills needed for a lifetime of enjoyment in fly fishing. We do this by keeping the instructor to student ratio to an absolute minimum. On group lesson days there will be a maximum of four students per instructor, and on the putting-into-practice fishing days, two guests will share a professional guide.

About Brad Schuelke
Brad is Director of Activities at Sage Lodge and has been teaching fly fishing for over 25 years.  Originally from Oregon, Brad grew up chasing trout and steelhead on the fly throughout the Pacific Northwest, eventually guiding in Northern California and Southern Oregon.  The first fishing trip to Montana sealed the deal, however, and he has spent the last two decades chasing trout throughout the Rocky Mountains.  Brad has fished for many species around the world but still prefers feeding dry flies to rising trout on his home waters in Southwest Montana.
