Wild Patagonia Framed: A Photo Essay by Liam Donohoe

Liam Donohoe May 19, 2026

16,688 miles in the air, 1,682 kilometers in the back seat of a truck, and countless miles walked, all packed into three weeks in Patagonia. Six asados, one broken rod, waders that leaked in all the wrong places, and a brand-new pair of wading boots properly broken in.

Coyhaique River Lodge, Las Pampas Lodge, Jurassic Lake Lodge, and Estancia Rio Pelke made up the bulk of my March hit list, bouncing across Chile and Argentina with our Sage Experiences outfitters, fishing with their guides, sharing water with our guests, and inevitably eating more than planned. Somewhere along the way, a few pounds showed up, a lot of flies disappeared into trees, and a stack of memories piled up that photos only begin to capture. March in Patagonia truly is something special.

Coyhaique River Lodge

Known for effortless logistics, a well-appointed lodge, and access to such a diverse range of watersheds that I could return multiple times without repeating water, I only scratched the surface of this world-class program.

Las Pampas Lodge

Just the right amount of frills and a whole lot of character, this is an angler’s paradise. Diverse water, trophy fish, and an atmosphere that doesn’t just share the passion but pulls you into it like family, Las Pampas Lodge delivered.

Jurassic Lake Lodge

The hype is real. The lake was humbling, the fish were genuinely massive and it felt like fishing in another world. When the wind wore me down and I caught enough fish, a warm fire, excellent food, and great hosts were waiting just up the shore.

Estancia Rio Pelke

Gauchos, guanacos, rhea birds and colorful trout. This was an authentic, and immersive program with just the right amount of challenge. Built by anglers for anglers, Estancia Rio Pelke reinforced my love of spring creeks where every bend that  looked right, often was. All while set against scenery that hardly felt real.

Coyhaique River Lodge, Chile

Brothers Gaston and Claudio Urrejola may be the most talented, multi-faceted lodge owners we have ever met. Between them they can do virtually anything including building a spectacular lodge themselves and then turning that into one of the best-run fly fishing and multi-sport lodges in South America. Located just outside of the regional capital of Coyhaique, an area widely considered Chile's trout fishing mecca, this first-class modern facility sets the standard for premier fly fishing lodges in Chilean Patagonia. The lodge's program offers a diverse and exciting array of excellent trout fishing opportunities, including lots of private access fishing properties, as well as a wide range of outdoor experiences including hiking, mountain biking, rafting and horseback riding. In short, they have something for everyone, and they do it all with expertise and care.

Las Pampas Lodge, Argentina

Well past the end of the good road in Argentina’s Chubut province is an area simply referred to as Rio Pico. This is the home of Las Pampas Lodge and their multi-faceted, quintessentially Patagonian trout fishing program. When it comes to diverse water types, fishing styles, and trout species, Las Pampas Lodge may be unbeatable. With a multitude of spring creeks, small freestone rivers, and trophy stillwaters, anglers find an array of rainbow, brown, and brook trout fishing options that would take weeks to fully sample. If the lodge-based options aren’t enough, anglers can take advantage of a special satellite trophy brook trout camp (available during certain times of the season).

Jurassic Lake Lodge, Argentina

If we were put on the spot and asked specifically where the most prolific 100 yards of trophy trout water in the world was, our response would be instant, and our tone would be confident. “It is where Argentina’s Rio Barrancoso flows into Lago Strobel.” We have been there and fished it and must say that in all our years of fly fishing, we have never seen, heard of, or experienced anything remotely like it. Some label it surreal or incomprehensible, but for simplicity and accuracy let us call it the one and only Jurassic Lake Lodge.
