Getting Ready

Welcome to your Fly Water Travel trip guide. We’re excited to help you prepare for your upcoming adventure! Inside, you’ll find everything you need: your to-do list, travel logistics, destination notes, and a curated tackle guide tailored to your trip.

To-Do List:

✓  Arrange flights to/from Salalah International Airport (SLL), Oman

✓  Apply for Omani visa (see Visa Application section)

✓  Complete your personal online guest registration form

Getting to the Lodge:
To reach Arabian Fly Sport Fishing, you will need to arrange travel to and from Salalah International Airport (SLL). International flights to SLL go through Muscat, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Doha direct into Salalah International airport. Major airlines that are servicing these flights are American Airlines, United, Delta, Southwest, Oman Air, Emirates, and Qatar Airways.

Arrival Day:
Upon arrival at the airport, you will pick up your luggage, clear customs and exit the airport. In case you need assistance with your luggage (a very short distance), airport porters are available. As you exit customs, a Juweira Boutique Hotel representative will meet you and transport you to the hotel, roughly a 20-minute drive.

Please note that check-in into the hotel is no earlier than 3:00 PM local time. After you are checked into your hotel, you may get settled in and prepare your gear for the next days of fishing.

Departure Day:
Departure times are flexible but check out through the hotel is at noon. If guests require a late check out, it can be arranged but not guaranteed. Guests will be transferred to the airport to check-in for their flight home.

Documentation Requirements: To enter Oman, all guests are required to have the following:

  • Passport: Valid for the duration of your trip.
  • Omani Visa: Visa can be obtained upon arrival for most countries or you can apply beforehand at evisa.rop.gov.om

Travel Cash:  As a guideline we recommend that each guest travel with approximately $1,000-$1,400 for guide gratuities, bar tabs, licenses, etc. At the end of your stay, you may pay your tab with cash or credit card.

Gratuities:
Tipping is at your discretion and should relate directly to the level of service you receive. Gratuities are best paid in cash. As we are often asked about customary tipping practices, the following are suggestions for your convenience, all in US dollars.

  • Fishing Guides: $100 per skiff per day. For a shared boat this is $50 per angler per day.

Local Customs:
Females are respectfully requested to cover their knees and shoulders when outside of the hotel grounds. There is no need to cover your head unless you plan on visiting a mosque where you will be required to cover your head and wear clothing that covers your wrists and ankles.

Fishing Licenses:
Fishing licenses are included in your package price.

Biting Insects:
Oman is considered a malaria free zone. Mosquitoes are present at times but generally mild on the hotel property. The best deterrent is either covering up with clothes and/or utilizing a solid bug spray.

Cell Coverage and Wi-Fi:

  • Cell Coverage: 4G is available in most areas, outside of the fishing grounds
  • Wi-Fi: The hotel has wireless internet

Power:
Power is standard 240 volt (same as the UK). You will need a Type G plug adapter with voltage converter. If you do not have a converter, it can cause damage to your electronics.

Laundry:
Laundry service is available for a fee and paid on-site at the hotel.

Water:
The tap water is safe to brush your teeth, but due to the desalination process we suggest you only drink bottled water

Beverages/Alcohol:

  • Soft Drinks, beer, wine, and alcohol: Not included and individual bar tabs are kept to be paid at the end of stay.

Note: Alchohol is not permitted on the boat or anywhere outside of the hotels/bars

Emergency Medical Assistance:
The closest medical facility is in Salalah. Guests have the responsibility to disclose any special medical, physical, or dietary needs to the lodge ahead of time. All clients are required to have FULL travel insurance to cover them for the duration of their stay with Arabian Fly. This must include ‘from scene of accident MediVac insurance’.

Arabian Fly Sport Fishing Tackle Overview

The fishery in Oman requires two setups to cover all the species that you may encounter. A 9ft 9 or 10 weight paired with a tropical clear tip floating line for the permit, milkfish, dorado, etc., and a 9ft 12 weight paired with a tropical GT floating line for the larger trevally, tuna, and sailfish.

Arabian Fly Sportgishing - Provided Equipment:

  • Rods/Reels/Lines: Included. As a Sage Experiences Outfitter, Arabian Fly provides guests with first-class Sage rods, reels, and RIO lines curated specifically for their fishery.
  • Flies: Flies are not included. We suggest that guests purchase a fly package from the outfitter prior to the trip for this unique fishery.
  • Flats Shoes: Not included. This can include zip-style booties or boots for the times when fishing off the beach.

Arabian Fly Sport Fishing Permit Setup

This is the go-to setup for permit at Arabian Fly Sport Fishing. The 9- or 10-weight is the most versatile permit rod overall and handles many fishing situations, including other species. Having a tropical floating line with a clear intermediate tip is also very important for stealthy presentations. Having another setup with a full floating line can also prove useful in certain situations when you want to keep the fly and/or line higher in the water column.

Recommended Terminal Tackle:

  • Medium to fast action 9 foot, 9 or 10 weight 4 piece fly rod
  • Reliable corrosion resistant reel
  • Weight forward tropical floating line with a 15 foot intermediate clear tip
  • Spools of 16lb, 20lb, 30lb fluorocarbon tippet to build leaders

Arabian Fly Sport Fishing GT Setup

This is the go-to setup for permit at Arabian Fly Sport Fishing. The 9 weight is the most versatile permit rod overall and handles many of the fishing situations. For anglers that want a rod to help when the wind picks up or prefers a bit more rod all-around, a 10-weight is another great option. Both rods help deliver the often-heavier weighted flies that most of the Yucatán fisheries employ. They also have the ability to deliver lighter shrimp patterns when the conditions call for it.

Recommended Terminal Tackle:

  • Medium to fast action 9 foot, 9 weight 4 piece fly rod
  • Reliable corrosion resistant reel
  • Weight forward tropical floating line
  • 10-12 foot 16-20lb mono and/or fluorocarbon leaders (qty 4 each)
  • Spools of 16-20lb fluorocarbon tippet

Arabian Fly Sport Fishing Flies

We highly suggest relying on the outfitter for a selection of flies, which can be purchased on arrival. They will be in tune with the exact patterns that are working at the time of your trip. If you are wanting to bring your own, here are some suggestions:

  • Crab patterns - Size 2 to 1/0 hooks (tied with heavy dumbbell eyes)
  • Shrimp Patterns - Size 2 to 1/0 hooks (tied with heavy dumbbell eyes)
  • Clousers - Size 2/0 hooks (tan, chartreuse over white).
  • Poppers/NYAPS - Size 6/0
  • GT Flies - Size 6/0 to 8/0 - baitfish patterns

When fishing from the boat going bare foot is best so that you can feel your fly line around your feet and avoid stepping on it. Otherwise, socks can be worn to protect from the sun or biting flies. Wet wading with flats fishing boots or zip-up style neoprene flats booties work great. You may also want to bring flip-flops or sandals to wear on the boat or around the lodge.

Definitive studies have shown that sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate severely damage coral reefs. As Turneffe Flats works diligently to protect the marine environment of the Turneffe Atoll and Belize, we request that your sunscreen not contain either of these dangerous chemicals while snorkeling, diving or fishing at Turneffe. Appropriate sunscreen is available for sale in the gift shop.
