Overview

Arroyo Pescado Lodge sits in the heart of Patagonia’s Chubut Province, offering a rare blend of solitude, history, and world-class fly fishing across its 30,000-acre private estancia. Tucked just 30 minutes from Esquel Airport, or a scenic 3.5–4-hour drive from Bariloche, the lodge feels remote yet remains remarkably accessible.
The landscape surrounding it is classic Patagonian steppe: wide valleys, sweeping mountain views, and miles of pristine spring creek flowing through a working estancia. Guests stay in a restored Welsh farmhouse with only three charming rooms, creating an intimate, home-like atmosphere for no more than six guests at a time. This allows for deeply personalized service, warm hospitality, and a genuine sense of connection with the land. With miles of water and wildlife literally steps from the door, Arroyo Pescado offers anglers privacy, authenticity, and an immersive experience that blends natural beauty, adventure, and the rich history of early Welsh-Argentine settlers and frontier legends.

Fishing Program

Arroyo Pescado Lodge offers exclusive access to 5 miles (9 km) of the famed Arroyo Pescado spring creek and 8.7 miles (14 km) of the Teka River; both entirely within the property. This complete control of the watershed allows anglers to experience some of the most pristine and lightly pressured trout water in Patagonia. The crystal-clear creek flows directly beside the lodge, making it possible to step outside your room and be casting to rising fish in minutes.

The fishing is ideal for dry fly enthusiasts and sight-fishing purists, with its gin-clear pools, undercut banks, and wild trout that reward precision and stealth. Expert local guides, a flexible daily schedule, and complete exclusivity on the home waters make this an exceptional experience for anglers seeking authentic, technical, and rewarding fishing.

Accommodations

The lodge itself is a beautifully restored Welsh farmhouse that blends historic character with comfort and thoughtful design. With just three guest rooms, the atmosphere is warm, relaxed, and intentionally intimate; ideal for small groups, couples, and travelers who value privacy and a personalized touch. Common spaces include a cozy living room with a large stone fireplace, a cocktail bar, and inviting indoor and outdoor seating areas that overlook the spring creek and open valley.
The cuisine is a highlight: fresh, locally inspired meals paired with excellent Argentine wines and served with genuine hospitality. Guests can enjoy outdoor dining, fireside evenings, or quiet moments taking in the sweeping views of the estancia.

Fly Water Q&A

Who is best suited to this destination?
This is an excellent destination for anglers who enjoy spring creek fishing and a high level of service. While each beat on the Teka and Arroyo Pescado offers something slightly different, the overall style of fishing remains consistent throughout the trip. It is also a great option for mixed-interest groups or couples, with opportunities for hiking, horseback riding, and biking.

Where is the lodge?
The lodge is located approximately 47 km southeast of Esquel, Argentina.

How do I get there?

Guests will fly to Buenos Aires, Argentina, and then connect to Esquel. Upon arrival in Esquel, you will be met at the airport and transferred approximately 30 minutes to the lodge. Most international flights arrive into Buenos Aires early in the morning, and as there is typically only one daily flight to Esquel from the domestic airport, an overnight in Buenos Aires may be required depending on flight schedules.

When should I go?

The Arroyo Pescado spring creek originates on the property and remains cool and clear throughout the season. The Teka River is more susceptible to drought and warmer summer conditions. Fishing is consistently productive from November through April, with peak conditions typically occurring in the spring and fall when temperatures are cooler and hatches are more consistent.

How will I fish?

This is a fully walk-and-wade program. Both the spring creek and river are divided into beats, and guests are transported between them by their guide in a 4x4 vehicle. Most fishing is done with dry flies in classic spring creek fashion, though small dry-dropper setups and streamers can also be effective.

Is there wade fishing?

Yes. The program is entirely walk-and-wade, though many productive areas can be accessed directly from the bank..

Where will I fish?

Guests will fish both the Arroyo Pescado spring creek and the Teka River, which together offer approximately 13.7 miles of private water. Beats are rotated based on conditions, rest periods, and current fishing quality.

How long does it take to reach the fishing grounds?

All fishing takes place within the boundaries of the estancia. Some beats are located just outside the lodge, while others may require up to a 45-minute drive.

What type(s) of fish will I catch?

This is entirely a rainbow and brown trout fishery

How many fish will I catch?

Average catch rates range from 10 to 20 fish per angler per day, depending on ability and conditions.

Will I see other anglers?

No. All fishing takes place on private water within the estancia. The only other anglers you may encounter are guests of the lodge, though there is excellent spacing between beats.

What are the guides like?

The guides are local Argentine professionals who are fluent in English, experienced, and highly knowledgeable about the fishery.

What are the physical demands?

Guests should be comfortable walking on uneven terrain, though access is generally straightforward and vehicles can get close to most beats. Wading is optional and can be adjusted to the angler’s comfort level.

Are there any special skills required?

No

Does the lodge provide equipment?

No. Guests should plan to bring their own waders, boots, rod, reel, and a selection of flies. Equipment is available for rent.

What is your favorite setup for the trip?

A 9-foot, 5-weight fast-action rod paired with a weight-forward floating line is the preferred setup. This provides enough power to handle wind while still allowing for delicate dry fly presentations. A 4-weight can also be a good option for intermediate anglers.

What are the top flies?
Medium-sized foam dry flies such as Fat Alberts, Chubby Chernobyls, and Water Walkers are effective across most conditions. Small black or green streamers work well in deeper water, and during calm conditions with active hatches, classic patterns like Parachute Adams, Elk Hair Caddis, and Humpies can be very productive.

What are the options if water conditions become challenging?
As a spring creek system, Arroyo Pescado is not prone to blowing out. The primary challenge is wind, which can typically be mitigated through proper positioning and guidance from your guide. The Teka is prone to drought conditions on dry years. In the event of low water and high temperatures, guests will shift their focus to the spring creek which remains consistent and cold throughout the season.

What is a typical day like?

Mornings are relaxed, with guests enjoying breakfast before heading out with their guide to assigned beats. The first session is followed by lunch, either streamside or in a covered sheep-shearing barn with panoramic views, often accompanied by appetizers and wine. After lunch, guests fish a second beat through the afternoon before returning to the lodge for a well-prepared, traditional meal.

What is the general vibe, atmosphere and style of the lodge?

This is a highly authentic Argentine experience. Gauchos move cattle on horseback, meals are prepared over open fire, and trout rise in clear water throughout the property. The atmosphere reflects both the culture and landscape of the region.

Is there an on-site owner, manager or other point-person at the lodge?

Yes

Where do we eat, and what are the meals like?
Meals a combination of authentic Argentinian asado and high end fair. Expect large portions expertly prepared by several chefs with appetizers and regionally selected wines.

What is the alcohol policy?

Beer, wine, and alcohol is included

Where do we stay, and what are the accommodations like?
The Welsh House is a historic estancia that has been renovated and expanded. It currently features three bedrooms with two shared bathrooms in a communal setting. Plans are underway for a new lodge with eight bedrooms, each with ensuite bathrooms. The experience is social and immersive, with shared meals and regular interaction with staff.

Is there internet and/or cell service?

Yes. High-speed internet is available in the lodge and common areas.

Are there other activities?
Additional activities include horseback riding, hikes, bird watching, and mountain biking.

Are there any other expenses?

Fishing equipment rental is available for a modest daily fee.

Do I need a visa?

No visa is required ahead of time. It will be issued at the airport upon arrival to the country.

Are there any health concerns, dangers or annoyances?

No significant concerns. We recommend that all guests consult the U.S. Department of State and CDC websites for current travel guidance.
