Overview

Our friends and long-time Argentina partners, Tres Amigos Outfitters, have expanded their king salmon program from Glacier King to the small and intimate Rio Guanaco. Only a few hours outside of the southern Patagonia hub of El Calafate, the Rio Guanaco is a long system that drains from Los Glaciares National Park through a remote and scenic canyon. The program is based out of Estancia La Sofia, a scenic riverside lodge surrounded by spectacular canyons and abundant wildlife, including condors, pumas, and guanacos. This river is a hidden gem in southern Patagonia, well set up for fly anglers to target its bright king salmon in the 20- to 45-pound class.

Fishing Program

Guests will fish approximately 55 miles of the Rio Guanaco. Its headwaters originate in Los Glaciares National Park and flow into the giant Lake Videma, which drains into the La Leona River before eventually connecting with the mighty Santa Cruz River and the Atlantic Ocean.

Guests will swing flies using 11- to 12'6-foot 8-weight Spey and switch rods with Skagit lines and sink tips. There are four large beats near Estancia La Sofia extending up to the border of the national park. Beats will be accessed by truck and then by foot. The Rio Guanaco is small and intimate, with large boulders and many pools where kings rest and can be targeted by fly anglers. Guests will fish two anglers per guide. All guides are highly skilled English-speaking fly fishing guides and part of the larger Tres Amigos team. The closest beat is walking distance from the lodge, and the farthest beat accessible by vehicle is about 40 minutes.

Accommodations

Estancia La Sofia is a comfortable lodge taking up to six anglers per week, in double rooms with limited single rooms available each week, all with bathrooms attached.

The lodge is located on a sprawling estancia within sight and walking distance to the Rio Guanaco. There is an expansive dining room with windows looking out to the nearby snow-capped mountains. There is 24-hour electricity supported by hydropower with wireless high-speed internet access.

All meals are freshly prepared by a chef on-site and feature authentic Argentine cuisine.

Fly Water Q&A

Who is best suited to this destination?
This destination is best suited for anglers who want to visit a unique and remote king salmon fishery in southern Patagonia.

Where is the lodge?
The lodge is located on Estancia La Sofia, a private ranch in Southern Patagonia along the Rio Guanaco several hours from the mountain hub of El Calafate.

How do I get there?
Guests typically take an evening flight from the US to arrive early morning at the Buenos Aires International Airport (EZE) in Argentina. Upon landing, guests will clear customs and transfer to the domestic airport (AEP). Guests need to allow at least four hours for this transfer between landing and their next flight south. From here, all guests will head to El Calafate to overnight. The following morning, guests will be met by a representative of the lodge and ground transferred approximately 2 ½ to 3 hours to the estancia.

When should I go?
The season runs from December through mid-February. Early season offers fewer but fresher fish, mid-season typically sees higher numbers of fish in the system.

How will I fish?
Fly anglers will use 8-weight Spey and switch rods with heavy sink tips to swing flies for king salmon, focusing on holding water in pools and deeper runs. Two-handed rods are the most effective way to cover water and handle the heavy sink tips, although some single hand fishing may be available.

Is there wade fishing?
Yes, it is 100% wade fishing. The wading is generally straightforward and often wading past your knees is not necessary depending on the run, but you may need to cross the river in certain areas.

Where will I fish?
Guests will fish primarily private water on the Rio Guanaco within and near the estancia. The program accesses roughly 17 km of river with no outside pressure.

How long does it take to reach the fishing grounds?
Fishing beats are close to the lodge, ranging from just minutes away to a maximum of about 35 minutes by 4x4 vehicle.

What type(s) of fish will I catch?
This is a king salmon program, focusing on fish in the 20– to 40-pound class with larger fish present. The Rio Guanaco is known to produce some very bright king salmon, considering the great distances that they travel to reach the river.

How many fish will I catch?
Like most king salmon fisheries, dedicated anglers will need to set modest expectations. Catch rates will vary by conditions and timing, and anglers should set their sights on having 1 encounter per day and solidly hooking 2 – 3 in a week would be a job well done. The nature of king salmon fishing is that this is not a high catch rate endeavor. Rather, the focus is on targeting large, migratory fish in a unique setting rather than high numbers.

Will I see other anglers?
No. There are just six anglers at the lodge each week and they are the exclusive outfitter on the estancia.

What are the guides like?
They are highly skilled fly fishers, Spey casters, tyers, and English-speaking. They want guests to feel and see these remarkable fish. They work here very deliberately because the location is stunning, and the fish in the system are so extraordinary.

What are the physical demands?
Moderate. Guests need to be able to do moderate off-trail hiking, some river crossings, and cast heavy tackle in windy conditions. Expect full fishing days with some walking and time on your feet, but terrain and access are manageable.

Are there any special skills required?
Spey casting experience is helpful but not required. A willingness to cover water and fish hard and patiently with limited opportunities is important.

Does the lodge provide equipment?
The lodge is happy to rent tackle that is well-suited to the task at hand. They are also happy to sell the appropriate flies if guests do not have the right flies. Guests should be prepared to bring all their own fly tackle.

What is your favorite setup for the trip?
When we travel to Rio Guanaco, we always bring an 11- to 12’6-foot, 8 – 9 wt two-handed rods with Skagit heads and sink tips (Intermediate, and T-11 to T-14). Single-hand 8 – 9 wt. rods can also work, although two handed rods are more efficient for covering water and consistently turning over the large flies with sink tips.

What are the top flies?
Intruder-style flies and large streamers in contrasting colors like black, blue, and chartreuse are the main staples. It is helpful to have a range of sizes, colors, and weights to cover the ranges of fishing conditions that can be experienced throughout the season.

What are the options if water conditions become challenging?
The river is glacier-influenced and can fluctuate with rain and snowfall in the headwaters. Fishing strategy typically adjusts by rotating beats and focusing on fishable water. If the river blows out, there are no other fishing opportunities within the estancia.

What is a typical day like?
Our outfitters, who are part of the Tres Amigos team, like to fish a split day schedule. This typically means breakfast around 7:30 AM and then heading out about 8:30 AM. Most days, guests will return to the lodge for lunch and a siesta. The evening session will typically begin about 3:30 PM and end around 8 PM. Then there will be a late dinner starting shortly before 9 PM.

What is the general vibe, atmosphere and style of the lodge?
The lodge is small, comfortable, and focuses on fishing, scenery, and a relaxed, intimate group experience. A limited number of single rooms are available each week for an extra charge.

Is there an on-site owner, manager or other point-person at the lodge?
Yes, the program is operated in partnership with the estancia owner, with oversight from Tres Amigos Outfitters. There is always a head guide on site and lodge staff in case anyone needs anything during their visit.

Where do we eat, and what are the meals like?
Meals are served in the lodge dining room and prepared by a chef, featuring traditional, locally sourced Patagonian cuisine.

What is the alcohol policy?
House wine and beer are included and guests can bring their own hard alcohol.

Where do we stay, and what are the accommodations like?
Estancia La Sofia accommodates up to six anglers per week across four rooms, each with a private bathroom. The lodge offers 24-hour electricity and internet.

Is there internet and/or cell service?
Wi-Fi is available at the lodge, but there is no cell coverage.

Are there other activities?
They are limited. Some opportunities for hiking, horseback riding, or wildlife viewing can be organized in advance, but we consider this a fishing only destination.

Are there any other expenses?
Fishing licenses, gratuities, and rental gear if needed.

Do I need a visa?
U.S. travelers do not require one for short stays.

Are there any health concerns, dangers or annoyances?
Weather and water conditions can change quickly. We recommend that guests always consult with the U.S. Department of State and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention websites for general travel information and guidelines.
