Once upon a time, on the Lower Sac amid a summer afternoon emerged RIO's Hogan Chubby Cousin. Signature tyer Hogan Brown gives us the deets on this deadly attractor nymph.
"There was a summer on the Lower Sac where the Rubber Leg Posse Bugger Nymph was the jam. Every guide on the river was fishing the fly, and eventually, the bins at the fly shop were empty (and yes, I buy flies when guiding a lot—no one has time to tie all their flies). I figured there was no better time to develop a new fly—empty bins plus fish that had seen the fly for months equals time to innovate.
I tied up a few variations of this fly to start. I wanted something quick and easy to tie but had plenty of life and attention-grabbing elements when fished through the lava rock gardens of the Lower Sac and deep swirl holes. In the end, I settled on the simplest of the versions to prevent losing this fly to said rock gardens.
