RIO's Inkblot

This pattern was designed to fill a gap in striper flies by creating a true squid imitation that behaves naturally in the water column. Unlike traditional patterns that sink too quickly or lose posture between strips, this fly is built unweighted, allowing it to hover, suspend, and “breathe” in the strike zone with minimal movement—just like real squid. The large profile and oversized eye serve as key visual triggers, giving predators a clear focal point and increasing commitment strikes, especially in low light or off-color water. Carefully selected materials provide lifelike pulsing action without adding excess weight, collapsing on the strip and reopening on the pause to mimic natural propulsion and suspension. The result is a pattern that not only matches the silhouette of a squid, but more importantly replicates its behavior—keeping the fly in front of fish longer and eliciting more confident eats.
