Sage Lodge - Spring 2024 Report

Brad Schuelke | Sage Lodge May 08, 2024

Our friend Brad Schuelke sent us this spring report from Sage Lodge, Montana.

Spring has started off with a bang in Paradise Valley! Thanks to warmer weather conditions than last year, we have been out and about on our local rivers since early March and the fishing has been excellent.

The Yellowstone, Boulder and Stillwater rivers have all been productive, with dry fly opportunities on baetis, midges and Mother’s Day caddis. The Yellowstone, especially, appears to be returning to form two years after the flood as it has fished as well this spring as any year in recent memory. The local spring creeks have also come alive, with solid daily baetis activity.

Snowpack is below normal, so we expect that run-off will be less impactful than last year, creating good opportunities on the Madison river during May and June when the Yellowstone is in run-off mode. An early spring is also a good sign for the annual season opener in Yellowstone Park on Memorial Day weekend, some of the best fishing of the year in the park can be had on the Madison and Firehole rivers at that time. Overall, we are experiencing a pleasant and productive spring fishing season in Montana, and we can’t wait for summer.

DePuys Spring Creek is 100% sold out for the PMD window this year, but we have some great June and early July dates reserved. Reach out if you are interested in fishing with us this season.
