Welcome to your Fly Water Travel trip guide. We’re excited to help you prepare for your upcoming adventure! Inside, you’ll find everything you need: your to-do list, travel logistics, destination notes, and a curated tackle guide tailored to your trip.

To-Do List:

✓  Arrange flights to/from Cancún (CUN), Mexico

✓  Arrange hotel in Cancún at Marriott Courtyard Cancún Airport or Fairfield Inn & Suites Cancún Airport

✓  Complete personal online guest registration form

✓  Provide Fly Water with full name as it appears on passport and body weight for the charter flight

Getting to the Lodge:
To reach Beh Kay Lodge, guests need to arrange travel to and from Cancún International Airport (CUN). The airport has multiple direct flights from the U.S.A. and other countries, as well as an option to connect through Mexico City. There are multiple non-stop flights from Dallas Ft. Worth and Miami (American Airlines), Houston and Denver (United), Atlanta (Delta), and many more. Southwest Airlines also services Cancún.

Arrival Day:

Guests need to arrive in Cancún the day before their scheduled arrival at the lodge. Guests are asked to overnight either at the Marriott Courtyard Cancún Airport or Fairfield Inn & Suites Cancún
Airport due to its proximity to the airport and to each other. On the morning of scheduled arrivals at the lodge, guests will be picked up in the lobby of their Cancún hotels around 7:40 AM and transferred to the FBO – Private Aviation Terminal for the charter flight to the Pulticub Airstrip.

Departure Day:
Guests need to schedule a departing flight out of Cancún after 3:00 PM on the day they leave the lodge.

Documentation Requirements:
To enter Mexico, all guests are required to have the following:

  • Passport: Valid for the duration of your trip.

Domestic Flight Note:
Guests will fly an hour from the FBO – Private Aviation Terminal in an eight passenger Cessna Caravan. The flight has a 44-pound weight restriction per person. Having soft-sided, duffel style bags are preferred as they pack much better on the plane. Collectively, carry-on bags and luggage should meet the weight restriction. Please note that bags will be searched by the Mexican Army on arrival and departure at the Pulticub airstrip.

Travel Cash:
We recommend that each guest travel with approximately $1,100 - $1,500 (USD) for staff & guide gratuities, the on-site fly shop, and other potential incidentals.

Credit Cards:
The lodge does not accept credit cards.

Gratuities:
The following are guidelines, and all gratuities are up to the discretion of the individual guest. As the lodge rotates guides each day, guides appreciate being given gratuities at the end of each fishing day. However, it is also acceptable to give the total amount to the lodge managers at the end of your stay. House gratuities can be left with the lodge manager at the end of your stay.

  • Guides: $75 per person or $150 per guide per day
  • House staff: $75 per person per day
  • Transfer drivers: $5-$10 per transfer

Fishing Licenses:
Fishing licenses are included for stays of one week.

Cell Coverage and Wi-Fi:

  • Cell Coverage: There is no cell phone service at the lodge
  • Wi-Fi: The lodge has wireless internet. Connection speeds are only suitable for emailing and texting.

Communications:
While traveling in Mexico we recommend using WhatsApp as this is the way most lodges and outfitters communicate. Texting through the app will allow you to keep in touch with the outfitter, friends, and family when connected to Wi-Fi or your cell service provider.

Power:
Power is standard 110 volt (same as in the US) therefore US-based guests do not need any plug converters for electrical equipment.

Laundry:
Laundry service is available for a fee.

Water:
Bottled water is readily available throughout the lodge. The water from the faucets is potable, but we do not recommend drinking the water just to be safe.

Beverages/Alcohol:

  • Soft Drinks: Included
  • Beer and Wine: Included
  • Alcohol: Included and guests over the age of 18 are welcome to bring their own

Emergency Medical Assistance:
The closest medical facility is in Cancún, approximately 75 minutes by air from the
Pulticlub airstrip. Guests have the responsibility to disclose any special medical, physical, or dietary needs to the lodge ahead of time. In emergency situations, a charter flight may be required to reach a medical facility. Guests may want to consider medical evacuation coverage. We recommend Global Rescue.

Beh Kay Lodge Tackle Overview

We always travel with at least three to four set-ups for this trip. A 9ft 8-weight paired with a tropical bonefish floating line, a 9ft 9-weight paired with a tropical permit floating line, and a 9ft 10-weight paired with a all-around or grand slam style floating line, and if there are migratory tarpon present (June-July), then a 9ft 11- or 12-weight paired with a tarpon floating line.

Beh Kay Lodge - Provided Equipment:

  • Rods/Reels/Lines: Included. As a Sage Experiences Outfitter, Beh Kay Lodge provides guests with first-class Sage rods, reels, and RIO lines curated specifically for their fishery.

  • Flies: Flies are not included. We suggest packing a thoughtful mix of shrimp, crab, and baitfish, to cover a variety of conditions and species.

  • Flats Shoes: Not included. This can include shoes, zip-style booties, or boots.

Beh Kay Lodge Bonefish Setup

This is the go-to setup for bonefish at Beh Kay Lodge. The 8-weight is the most versatile bonefish rod around the world and handles every type of bonefish fly with ease. It strikes the right balance between presentation and power, making it a dependable choice for most situations. With enough backbone to punch a fly through moderate winds without overpowering smaller shrimp imitations.

Recommended Terminal Tackle:

  • Medium to fast action 9-foot, 8-weight 4-piece fly rod
  • Reliable corrosion resistant reel
  • Weight forward tropical floating line
  • 9-foot 12lb mono and/or fluorocarbon leaders (qty 4 each)
  • Spools of 12lb fluorocarbon tippet

Beh Kay Lodge Permit Setup

This is the go-to setup for permit at Beh Kay Lodge. The 9-weight is the most versatile permit rod overall and handles many of the fishing situations. For anglers that want a rod to help when the wind picks up or prefers a bit more rod all-around, a 10-weight is another great option. Both rods help deliver the often-heavier weighted flies that most of the Yucatán fisheries employ. They also have the ability to deliver lighter shrimp patterns when the conditions call for it.

Recommended Terminal Tackle:

  • Medium to fast action 9-foot, 9-weight 4-piece fly rod
  • Reliable corrosion resistant reel
  • Weight forward tropical floating line
  • 10-12-foot 16-20lb mono and/or fluorocarbon leaders (qty 4 each)
  • Spools of 16-20lb fluorocarbon tippet

Beh Kay Lodge Tarpon/Snook/Barracuda Setup

This setup is a great all-around for juvenile tarpon, snook, and barracuda at Beh Kay Lodge. The 10-weight is great, as it will handle all these species and then will also be a great secondary or backup if you need it for permit as well. Being that this will be a rod that is utilized to target diverse species, you can rely on a few easy options for leaders too, that can be switched out quickly and easily.

Recommended Terminal Tackle:

  • Medium to fast action 9-foot, 10-weight 4-piece fly rod
  • Reliable corrosion resistant reel
  • Weight forward tropical floating line
  • 10-12-foot 16-20lb test leaders with 45-50lb shock tippet (qty 4 each)
  • Spools of 50lb fluorocarbon tippet (tarpon/snook) and 40lb knottable wire (barracuda)

Beh Kay Lodge Migratory Tarpon Setup

In the months of June and July, when the migratory tarpon season is in full swing, having a 11- or 12-weight is what you want to have on standby in the boat. Opportunities to get a fly in front of these fish may not come as often around Espiritu Santo Bay but the opportunities exist, nonetheless. If you enjoy chasing the silver king, make sure you are ready!

Recommended Terminal Tackle:

  • Fast action 9-foot, 11- or 12-weight 4-piece fly rod
  • Reliable corrosion resistant reel
  • Weight forward tropical floating line
  • Spool of 80lb fluorocarbon tippet

Beh Kay Lodge Flies

Favorite Bonefish Flies:
A wide range of patterns are effective in sizes 2-6. Be sure to have un-weighted flies, moderate (bead chain eyes) weighted flies, and heavy flies with lead eyes to meet different conditions and water depths. The most popular colors are cream, and tan followed by pink, white, and brown.

Favorite Permit Flies:
We recommend permit flies ranging from light to heavily weighted for different fishing scenarios. Floating crabs are also another great pattern to have in the box. Colors can be in the tan and white variety and in areas closer to the ocean, a mix of tan/white with orange or red highlights can be a solid choice. These floating crabs should be tied on hook sizes ranging from a size #2-1/0.

Favorite Tarpon Flies:
Most tarpon flies are a great crossover for snook. Snook flies should imitate baitfish or shrimp. In the clearer water, however, snook really prefer lighter white/red head, chartreuse/white or tan/white combo colored flies.

Favorite Barracuda & Jack Crevalle Flies:

  • RIO’s Ka-Cuda (Size 2/0)
  • EP Baitfish (Tan/White, Chartreuse/White - Size 1/0)

Beh Kay Lodge Top 5 Flies

If we were only going to travel to Beh Kay Lodge with a maximum of 5 fly patterns. These the ones we would be sure not to leave home without. These are proven patterns that work in a variety of conditions and that remain favorite with guides and anglers alike:

Top 5 flies for Beh Kay Lodge:

  • Spawning Shrimp (bonefish & permit)
  • Raghead Crab (permit)
  • Squimp (bonefish & permit)
  • Dread Pirate (tarpon)
  • Enrico Puglisi Baitfish (tarpon/snook)

We understand packing for an adventure is not easy. On a trip like this it is very important to have everything you need and nothing you do not.
