SALT R8

Overview

Most salt rods are built for pure power and ultimate strength—that is table stakes for the venue and the discipline. With our new R8 graphite, adding 25% more strength-per-weight was the easy part—a simple function of material advancement—but one that also increased the fight in the rod even down to our six-weight. We increased the pure pulling power without the need to add more material, fillers or reinforcement. The outcome is simple, providing the ability for faster landing times - reducing fish fatigue and catch-and release stress on ever so delicate ecosystems.

More strength and fight were an obvious upgrade, yet few salt rods, especially in the heavier weights, achieve the importance of feel for fine touch shots and precise presentations. Shaping a taper that brought this increased touch into the equation took more time. Yet after a long residence in the birthplace of saltwater fly fishing, and working directly with the experienced guides there, our rod designers found the right profile and fiber alignment that delivered strength, fine touch presentation, and a more intuitive sweet spot to a class of rods that have long had a reputation as unwieldy, unforgiving, and difficult. With the SALT R8, gone are the days of sacrificing the feel and touch in your saltwater rod.

BEHIND THE SALT R8

SHAPING 8 REVOLUTIONS IN HOW WE FISH

R8 TECHNOLOGY

The advanced, leading-edge material behind R8 enables us to shape a rod with a stiffer, stronger backbone but a more sensitive tip and more connected feel. The secret is twofold. First, a proprietary aerospace composite with a greater hoop strength enables us to dimensionally grow taper diameter more quickly from the tip—while a nano-sintered resin application increases axial resilience and allows us to pack more fiber into the blank, resulting in that true two-way connection from hand to fly and back for greater feel, flow and control.

MADE IN THE USA

We’re not a big faceless factory, but rather a workplace of craftspeople who design and build the world’s best fly rods and reels using our hands and hearts. We do it by sharing ideas and always asking the next question to find what can be done to make this better. Our rods are built one at time right here on Bainbridge Island, WA, following hundreds of meticulous steps and passing through 23 sets of hands. We’re out there fishing the same places in the same unforgiving conditions that you are. Craftsmanship is applied experience. Lifetimes of it.

My 10wt Go-To

"I fished the 10wt R8 salt for most of 2025. From roosterfish from the beach and panga in Baja to striped bass on the Sacramento River to calico bass on the Wall in Los Angeles, this rod was my go to. It casts sinking lines incredibly well, has plenty of backbone in the fight, and takes a saltwater beating with aplomb."

New R8 10 weight

"Have only had the opportunity to cast the R8 indoors three times so far (winter in Ohio). Loads well and is the easiest 10 wt I have ever casted. Can get good distance without single or double hauling. Had a trip to Cuba scheduled for later in January, but not going because of current conditions there and the US situation with Venezuela. Have a trip to Mexico in April. Hope to catch some tarpon and permit. Will let you know how it goes. Thanks for making a great rod"

Perfect for Mag Bay striped marlin

"I used the Salt R8 12 wt with a foregrip during a recent trip to Magdelena Bay for striped marlin. The rod casts 500gr sinking line incredibly well and has fantastic pickup-up. When the fight is on, the rod provides plenty of backbone. A great rod for smaller marlin; can’t wait to use it again!"

Impressive

"Cast this sharp-shooting dream for a few bones in Cuba for a day recently and was not disappointed. It made me feel like I was a good caster. Picked up and laid down long lengths of line with one cast accurately. Beautiful rod"

Dean (5/5)

Lighter, stronger, faster. . .

"I had a chance to demo an 890-4 R8 Salt while on a recent bonefish trip and was impressed. When I got back to the states I ordered one asap. Sage finally lightened up the hardware on their saltwater line and are producing fantastic, comfortable to fish with all day rods. Keep up the good work."

Barrett C. (5/5)

Windy Bonefish

"The number choice for a windy bonefish rod or your everyday permit stick. Better than most!"

Chris A. (5/5)

My favorite rod

"The R8 salt is my favorite rod I have ever owned. Very good and gentle presentations but can also cast well in the wind. Fast enough action for me that I don't have to slow my cast down too much. I own 8, 9, and 11 weights and love all of them. Very well made rod and I don't plan on using any other one soon."

Daniel A. (5/5)

Rod good, reels need to be made in USA!

"GREAT, so far. Not used the rod yet, but have a few freshwater rods that I like! Build quality looks good, packing and delivery also. Too bad Sage reels were not made in USA…think about it Sage. WE are your customers!"

Patrick C. (5/5)

When You Want The Best!

"One of the best rod and reel combos I’ve ever owned. The Thermo has an incredibly smooth drag and the Salt R8 is an excellent rod for big fish. Paired they are the best option on the market!"

Favorite 8wt

"From bonefish to redfish this rod has been a hit for not only myself but for my clients."
