About is good as I expect it gets
"This review is for people who may not buy a full quiver of $1k rods: This rod was a warranty replacement for my broken Sage 389 LL, a rod many say is still better than Sage’s current offerings. So I was concerned that I would be disappointed when they could not repair it. For me, the Classic R8 is an improvement over the Graphite III LL at a level that I could not have anticipated. Its fluidity, paired with such high accuracy and recovery rate, just have to be experienced. The best description I can give is “intuitive. ” You can feel the rod so well that it is almost like you think the fly to its target. Just get in the flow. It can handle light presentations at short range and effortlessly reach 50 feet without losing its feel. My (now) older rods were all top-of-the-line when I purchased them. To this day, they remain excellent performers and are a testament to why good rods are money well spent. In comparison, if you’re a classical music person, I would say the Classic R8 is like going from Aaron Copland to Beethoven’s later quartets. It is simply on a different level of artistry and performance in fly casting. (I paired it with the Sage Trout 2/3/4 reel, and the fulcrum point feels spot on. ) So is it worth the nearly $1k price? Well, I’m 67 with a bad back, and I’m not sure how many more years I’ll have on the river. The experience this rod brings me is exactly what I want as I move into the sunset years of a hobby I have enjoyed since I was 17."
