Overview

Dorados on the Fly sits on the banks of the Upper Rio Paraná in northern Argentina in one of the most dynamic freshwater fisheries in South America. Set roughly 70 kilometers below the Yacyreta Dam, this expansive tailwater runs remarkably clear, creating ideal conditions for sight-fishing and technical presentations. While the region is best known for dorado, the river’s diversity is equally compelling: pacu, pira pita, and other native species thrive here, each offering its own style of challenge. The lodge is based in the small riverside town of Ita Ibate, where guests enjoy comfortable single-occupancy rooms, classic Argentine cuisine, and outstanding access to the river’s most productive channels. Days are spent exploring braided side channels, island edges, and structure-filled banks while immersed in the Parana’s vibrant jungle ecosystem complete with monkeys, toucans, and an incredible variety of wildlife. With experienced guides, a thoughtfully structured fishing program, and a blend of comfort and adventure, Dorados on the Fly delivers an impressive and well-rounded angling experience.

Fishing Program

The fishing program at Dorados on the Fly is built around maximizing productive conditions while maintaining a relaxed, enjoyable rhythm to the day. Anglers fish from 23-foot pangas designed for two casters to work comfortably at the same time, with guides using electric trolling motors to position the boat along banks, eddies, and structure. When conditions are right, the guide will pole the skiff along flats allowing one angler shots at cruising fish in shallow water. The focus is on the clear side channels of the Yahape and Repeski zones in areas renowned for large fish, but also for a diversity of species, healthy numbers, and consistently favorable water. Most of the fishing is done from boats, though when the dam releases a lot of water, it is sometimes possible to wade the small side channels, much like you would a trout stream.
Guests target dorado, pacu, and pira pita using a mix of streamers, and dries. Sight-fishing opportunities are frequent in the Parana’s gin-clear water, while searching drop-offs, seams, and woody structure with streamers offers a more traditional, exploratory approach. Accuracy is rewarded, as many of the most productive lies sit tight to rocks, cutbanks, overhangs, and submerged timber.
Fishing days are divided into a morning session and an evening session. After an early start, anglers fish until midday before returning to the lodge for lunch and a siesta, then head back out around 4:00 p.m. to fish until sunset aligning perfectly with the river’s natural feeding windows and avoiding the heat of the day.

Accommodations

The lodge provides a comfortable, welcoming home base overlooking a wide expanse of the Upper Paraná. Guests stay in well-appointed single-occupancy rooms, each with air conditioning, private bathrooms, and Wi-Fi. The main lodge features expansive river views and multiple common areas, including a bar, pool table, fly-tying room, and relaxed lounge spaces perfect for gathering after a day on the water.
Meals are a highlight of the experience, blending classic Argentine cuisine with fresh ingredients, regional wines, and warm, attentive service. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served in the main dining room, often hosted by Pinti or members of the guide team, creating a welcoming and communal atmosphere. A weekly asado, open-bar policy, and thoughtful hospitality round out an accommodation experience that complements the river perfectly.
