Overview

Rex Bryngelson is one of those early pioneers who came to Chile in search of whitewater and adventure and ended up finding incomparable rivers, a sense of place, true love and his life’s work in fly fishing hospitality and guiding. The end result is La Posada de los Farios (The Inn of the Brown Trout), located on the banks of the Rio Cisnes, two and ½ hours north of Coyhaique. This diverse area offers fly fishing anglers wading and floating options on multiple rivers, streams, and lakes in the Patagonia region coupled with a particularly intimate and inviting lodge experience. This is the perfect combination for serious anglers and guests who want to experience Patagonia at its best.

Widely considered the heart of Chile’s greatest trout fishing region, the fly fishing options at La Posada de los Farios are nearly endless — productive floats on the Rio Cisnes from the farmhouse’s front door, fly fishing hidden lagunas and spring creek tributaries, seldom-fished high country lakes and excursions into the coastal fjords for Pacific salmon and sea-run rainbow trout are all on the table. With the beautiful Queulat National Park just to the north, non-anglers can enjoy activities such as hiking, horseback riding, river rafting, bird watching, excursions into nearby wilderness areas, in addition to cultural visits to neighboring farms and villages. For hardcore anglers as well as game non-anglers in search of the unfiltered rewards of real rural Chile, La Posada de los Farios has repeatedly won the praise of our staff and clients.

Fishing Program

The fishing program at La Posada de los Farios is centered around the Patagonia region’s hearty population of wild brown trout. These trout are found in a wide range of habitats and known for their wiliness to move to dry flies. While floating multiple beats on the home waters of the Rio Cisnes is a cornerstone of the fly fishing program, there are also great many other fishing options including hidden lagunas, spring creek tributaries, seldom-fished high country lakes and, excursions into the coastal fjords. Some days anglers might begin their day of fly fishing at the doorstep, and other days they might head out on a longer road trip to a special destination. In either case, the fly fishing program is both diverse and flexible. Dry flies are used most often but, both nymph and streamer techniques are employed when conditions dictate. The fishing is primarily for wild and aggressive resident brown trout, hence the name: Los Farios, "fario" being the name used in Chile for Brown Trout.

Accommodations

The La Posada del los Farios lodge is the original ranch house, renovated to comfortably handle a maximum of six anglers per week . The three guest rooms offer private attached baths and comfortable beds. Each room has two twin beds; however, a queen bed can be arranged prior to your trip. There are no single occupancy options available. All linens are provided as well as bar soap and shampoo.

The living room at La Posada de los Farios is surrounded by a bay of windows and is the gathering place for cocktail hour and delicious hors d'oeuvres. Breakfasts and dinners are served in the dining room, just off the living room. Heat is provided by two wood stoves and electricity provided by generator.

Rex and his staff strive to maintain a relaxed "homey" atmosphere around La Posada de los Farios with delicious meals served family style, always complimented by fine Chilean wines, freshly baked bread and, fresh fruits and vegetables from the garden. An abundant shore lunch is prepared stream side by your guide and a steaming hot wood fired hot tub awaits at the end of the day. A traditional Patagonian style "asado" of fresh lamb is often prepared by local "gauchos" as a final farewell.

Additional Experiences

With the beautiful Queulat National Park just to the north, non-anglers can enjoy activities such as hiking, horseback riding, river rafting, bird watching, excursions into nearby wilderness areas, or cultural visits to neighboring farms and villages. The rural local people live a lifestyle that has long vanished from the North American continent and meeting them can often be a visitor's most memorable experience.
