Overview

Located along the banks of the Futaleufú River in Chile’s remote Palena Province, Matapiojo Lodge offers one of the most diverse and exploratory trout programs in Patagonia. Anglers rotate through a wide range of waters including the Futaleufu and Palena Rivers, Lago Yelcho, smaller tributaries, and a network of remote lagoons, creating a dynamic and varied week on the water.

The region’s unique geography creates an environment that supports a wide range of fisheries and fishing styles. Guests can expect everything from technical dry fly fishing to streamer fishing on lakes and rivers, with the ability to adapt daily based on conditions.

With comfortable glamping-style accommodations, a strong emphasis on local gastronomy, and access to a wide range of lightly pressured waters, Matapiojo Lodge delivers a well-rounded and immersive Patagonian fishing experience.

Fishing Program

The Matapiojo fishing program is built around variety and adaptability, with anglers fishing two per guide and traveling daily by 4WD vehicles and boats to access a broad selection of fisheries. The program includes rivers, lakes, and lagoons throughout the Palena region, many of which see little to no angling pressure.

Fishing techniques vary depending on location and conditions. Dry fly fishing is a major highlight, particularly when trout are feeding actively on the surface, while streamer fishing is effective for targeting larger fish in deeper water. Sight fishing opportunities are also common across multiple environments.

This diversity allows anglers to experience multiple fishing styles throughout their stay while maintaining consistent opportunities regardless of weather or water conditions.

Accommodations

Matapiojo Lodge offers a comfortable and thoughtfully designed glamping-style experience set along the Futaleufu River at the base of a dramatic cliff. The lodge features a central gathering space with a living room, dining area, and kitchen, creating a warm and social atmosphere for guests.

Guests stay in large, permanent wall tents equipped with comfortable beds, electricity, wooden floors, wood stoves, and private bathroom facilities. Each tent is designed to handle the rigors of Patagonian weather while maintaining a strong connection to the surrounding landscape.
Additional amenities include WiFi, laundry service, and a hot tub.

Meals are an integral part of the experience, with a focus on Patagonian gastronomy and locally inspired cuisine prepared by the lodge’s chef.

Additional Experiences

While fishing is the primary focus at Matapiojo Lodge, the surrounding Palena region offers a wide range of optional activities for guests looking to further explore the landscape. Options include heli-fishing for access to remote and rarely fished waters, as well as rafting on nearby rivers and kayaking on lakes and calmer stretches of water. Guests can also take advantage of trekking, canopy tours, and horseback riding to experience the terrain from different perspectives.

For those interested in a more relaxed or cultural experience, the lodge can arrange massages, rural tourism experiences, and bird watching or photographic safaris, all of which highlight the region’s unique wildlife and Patagonian heritage. These activities are available at an additional cost and can be incorporated into the itinerary based on interest and conditions.
