Power R8

Overview

Humankind was born to explore. Where do rivers lead? How far can the oceans carry us? What lies beyond the horizon when we cast our eyes - and flies - into the unknown? The same spirit drives innovation at Sage. We push boundaries to find answers that deliver performance. Enter the POWER R8.

Made to make fast more finesse-able, designed to cruise at the line speeds necessary for into-the-backing-knot shots, and built with the kind of R8-exclusive reserve power that handles the heaviest heads and rigs, POWER R8 gives you the keys to explore the inconceivable. It's your ticket to chase what others might call unreachable.

The newest addition to the R8 family, POWER R8 expands on the series' trademark versatility with a surge of velocity- perfect for commanding control and distance in the most technical conditions. Like every rod in the R8 lineage, POWER R8 is shaped by evolving challenges and real-world demands. But with its ultrafast action, POWER R8 adds another gear - taking over where moderate, fast, and some salt-specific actions max out.

THE NEW BALANCE OF POWER

When it comes to blending quick recovery, ample reserve power, and ultra-fast performance – POWER R8 takes the foot off the brakes. Lift lines at distance, cut through ripping conditions, increase range, and mobilize heavy rigs and supersize flies with minimal effort and maximum punch.

R8 PERFORMANCE+

Sage’s advanced R8 Technology is the driver behind rod actions tuned for maximum on-water versatility, creating an intuitive connection between the angler and the angling at hand. POWER R8 rods translate those signature attributes into an ultra-fast action stick made for increased line speed capabilities and control, giving you an edge when matching rise cadences, executing drifts, and casting in gusty conditions.

TRIMMED TO WIN

POWER R8’s Hot Rod Red colorway speaks to the ultra-fast action and high-performance qualities of the rod. Blanks are trimmed with sleek black-and-granite accents and a custom anodized reel seat with indexed slide band for easy alignment and installation of the reel. Both 590-4 and 690-4 models feature extra-figured walnut wood inserts and a hook keeper above the cork. All other models are fitted with saltwater ready anodized aluminum reel seats with built in hook keepers and a new cork/EVA fighting butt shape for added comfort and control.

SHAPING 8 REVOLUTIONS IN HOW WE FISH

R8 TECHNOLOGY

1 / 3

New Axial Fiber Formulation

Advanced nano-sintered resin application and a more resilient axial fiber allow us to re-profile the dimensional taper to get thicker quicker from tip to butt - resulting in better energy transfer and greater feel. Simply put - a better and more efficient "wiring" of energy.
2 / 3

EFFORTLESS ENERGY TRANSFER

Elongated energy transfer shifts the sweet spot closer to the hand creating a more natural extension of your arm for greater range, quicker reactivity and less wasted effort.
3 / 3

New circumferential hoop fiber

Advanced hoop fibers hold blank in optimal cylindrical shape creating greater circumferential strength - continuously maintaining inherent taper profile while actively engaged or under tension.

MADE IN THE USA

We’re not a big faceless factory, but rather a workplace of craftspeople who design and build the world’s best fly rods and reels using our hands and hearts. We do it by sharing ideas and always asking the next question to find what can be done to make this better. Our rods are built one at time right here on Bainbridge Island, WA, following hundreds of meticulous steps and passing through 23 sets of hands. We’re out there fishing the same places in the same unforgiving conditions that you are. Craftsmanship is applied experience. Lifetimes of it.

I Love this fly rod.

"This is a tremendous fly rod. I’ve used it in very different situations with very different lines and it excels with all. I use it in PA for Smallmouth with a Rio Smallmouth. It’s awesome. I brought it and several other rods to Labrador. I only used the PR8. Cast with the Rio XP and Max. Excelled with both. And I’m sitting in Anchorage writing this review. Rod got its butt kicked. Just abused. Not intentionally just the Alaska deal. I dropped it in the river trying to land an angry dollie. I was heartbroken. It came swirling back to me in an eddy. I love this rod. ."

Great 5 weight rod for

"Great 5 weight rod for casting flies at distance or wind but sensitive enough for most trout applications. Paired with 5 weight Bank Robber it is perfect for salmon flies or hoppers from a boat. Beautifully finished as well."

They gave it the right name! - 990-4

"This is probably the post powerful 9wt on the market today but is still a very nice rod to cast. The action reminds me of the old Loomis NRX 9wt. I thought it handled a Grand Slam nicely. It's a very pretty rod with a great reel seat, but I would rather seen Sage use black snakes and Cerecoils for the stripping guides."

5 stars!!

"Great end to end experience! Thank you!"

From 2’ trout to 30” carp, this 6wt has the power

"Unlike other fast powerful rods the R8-Power is still very responsive allowing the angler to deliver large wind resistant flies with ease. Even better, once you hook a fish the rod has all of the fighting power in the world. With the 690-4FB I have been able to land Brown Trout exceeding twenty four inches as well as Common Carp in the twenty-eight to thirty inch range. If you are looking for a competitive advantage taming large fish then you have found it in the power."
