Alaska demands the best of both angler and gear. Though we might do our best to control some of the variables, it’s not a matter of taming the Last Frontier—that ship sailed long ago. The best we can hope for is coming to an understanding: with the bears, with the weather, with the wilderness, and, of course, with the fish. Whether smolt-busting rainbows, mouse-chasing grayling, or gurgler-crazed silvers, those fish quickly outgrow expectations and words, much like the state they call home.
