There’s always that first trout trip of the year, and whether it happens on January 1st or June 1st makes no difference. Unlike tarpon or steelhead, trout are (almost) always there and, with a few exceptions, always looking for something to eat. It might be salmonflies in spring, tricos in July, or midges the size of a pinhead on the shortest day of the year. Trout season is more a state of mind than a collection of days on the calendar. Take that state of mind down to the river with a handful of flies and a bit of creativity, and you just might be surprised how generous trout season can actually be.
